Character Information

character name: Naomi Misora
Fandom: Death Note / Another Note
Timeline: after Raye's death, pre-Kira.
character's age: 28

canon powers, skills, and equipment: Naomi does not carry much on her in the way of equipment; possibly a defunct cell phone, and most likely a portable laptop computer (no longer with internet access). She also owns a handgun, despite the fact that she left the FBI years earlier. The only skills she retains in her new environment would be her analytical abilities.

canon history: Not much is known about Naomi's youth. She was raised in Japan until she had completed high school; after that, she attended college and training in America to become a member of the FBI. After several years she was introduced to Raye Penber, another FBI agent, and became involved romantically with him.

It was during a temporary "leave of absence" from the Bureau—which was actually a suspension for a mistake she'd made—that Naomi was contacted by the mysterious British detective known only as "L". He asked her to assist him with a particular case in Los Angeles, CA involving a string of strange, unsolved murders.

The Los Angeles BB Murders were also known as the Locked Room Murders, as well as the Wara Ningyo Murders, because of the doors mysteriously locked from the inside as well as strange, straw voodoo-like dolls that were present at each murder scene. The lives of three victims had already been claimed so far when Naomi agreed to take on the case. They were of various genders and ages; the only similarities seemed to be the doors locked from the inside of each room, and the initials of the victims—B.B., Q.Q., and then B.B. once more. Naomi was in contact with L by phone sporadically throughout the investigation, but at the scene of the first murder she was surprised to find someone hiding underneath the victim’s bed. When he crawled out, he was revealed to be a bedraggled, slovenly figure with black hair and disheveled clothing and strange mannerisms. He identified himself as Rue Ryuzaki, a private detective hired by the victim’s family. Naomi was instantly suspicious of him; however, he seemed harmless, and after conferring with L she decided to allow Ryuzaki to help her investigate.

On the way to the site of the second murder scene a couple of days later, she was assaulted in broad daylight in an alleyway. Fortunately her proficiency in capoeira, a blend of martial arts and dancing, enabled her to protect herself even without a weapon. She never did see the face of her assailant, but the timing of it raised her suspicions further with regard to the new mysterious detective—who, she discovered, with the help of her boyfriend Raye, was not actually a hired detective at all.

Upon examining clues left at the second and third murder scenes with Ryuzaki, Naomi was able to come to several conclusions about the hints the killer was leaving behind—enough so that they believed they would be able to predict the date, time and location of the fourth murder when it occurred. They holed themselves up at the location of two potential victims (again with the initials "B.B"), and Naomi took one room while Ryuzaki took another.

It was when she was alone with her thoughts, finally, that Naomi was able to put the final pieces together with regard to the killer. Ryuzaki had let it slip that he’d somehow known she was skilled in capoeira, when she had never mentioned it in his presence—only when she was on the phone secretly with L. There was no definitive way he would have known it if he hadn’t attacked her in the alleyway that day. When she realized this, in addition to having figured out how the rooms had been locked from the inside due to the placement of the straw dolls, Naomi quickly bolted out of her room. She charged full speed toward the room Ryuzaki occupied, and got it open in time to witness him in an attempt at self-immolation. He was to be the fourth victim himself, burnt by fire. She doused the flames, saving his life, and put him under arrest.

Naomi herself had caught the perpetrator, the man known as "B" (Beyond Birthday), who had ties to L through an organization for orphaned children known as Wammy's House. Possibly because of his warped upbringing, Beyond Birthday had desired to surpass L at any cost, even as a criminal. The case successfully closed, Naomi was finally allowed to meet L, who as an extremely reclusive detective had never before ventured into the public eye. Ironically, he introduced himself to her—in a déjà-vu-like parallel of his former nemesis—as "Ryuzaki".

After solving the case and reinstating her prestige at the FBI, Naomi quit her job almost two years later. Her aim was to marry Raye Penber, to whom she’d become engaged, and settle down to a quiet married life. But with the advent of the serial killer known as Kira in Japan not many months afterward, she began to rethink her life of retirement from the Bureau.

Naomi and Raye traveled to Japan shortly after the beginning of the Kira case. Raye, who was still part of the FBI, had been assigned to work for the team that was placed under L’s direction. Naomi accompanied him to visit her family and introduce them to her fiancé; although, this may very well have been her own cover story for potentially immersing herself in the case as well, given that L was already in Japan and on it. Raye actively discouraged her from getting involved in the investigation, despite her reputation as a brilliant detective, insisting it was dangerous and reminding her that she was now his retired fiancée. But when he himself fell victim to Kira's plotting and was found dead along with several other FBI agents, Naomi quickly resolved to find and catch the killer herself.

After deciphering clues and using her razor-sharp intellect to make certain deductions about Kira's methods of killing, she planned to take this information to L and assist him in solving the case. But by some stroke of unfortunate luck she was intercepted by Kira himself (Light Yagami). Although she was at first cautious with him, Naomi made the mistake of telling Light her real name. This sealed her fate as yet another victim of Kira. He orchestrated her death using the Death Note, writing down that she should commit suicide over her heartbreak at losing her fiancé; however her body has not been found, and she is currently listed as a missing person.

personality: Naomi is a shrewd and analytical detective, and her tenacious personality reflects it. Her skills at the FBI prior to her taking leave were apparently worthy enough of impressing L, the world's greatest detective, and inciting him to collaborate with her.

She is often very direct and to the point when trying to answer questions or solve mysteries, almost to the point of being blunt; however she is also very cautious around people she does not know, and divulges information only on a need-to-know basis. At the same time with respect to her work she is fearless, daring and courageous. She would never back down from a fight or a threatening situation, and will not hesitate to put herself in harm's way in order to further her cause in solving a case.

Physically, she is very fit and athletic. She is highly skilled in the Portuguese art of Capoeira, which is a unique style of fighting based on a blend of martial arts and acrobatic dancing—flips, leaps, and evasive maneuvers. She holds her own during a fight and is careful to not expose herself in too easily a manner, but at the same time she absolutely refuses to run from danger. This earned her the nickname "Massacre Misora" at the FBI. Her main aim during fighting is to get a good look at her assailant, to discover both his identity and any weaknesses he might have; however, this approach to fighting really only works if her attacker is strictly human, and she would most likely not be able to evade her enemy for very long if he had superhuman skills.

Naomi is extremely independent—preferring to work alone, and performing the best in such a way—and does not seem like the type of person to abandon that aspect of her life, even for marriage and family. Yet she is a traditionalist, and at Raye’s request she willingly quits her job with the FBI. Hers is a quiet strength, born of duty and responsibility.

Following the death of her fiancé by Kira’s hand, she pursues the Kira case with a drive almost bordering on fanatical obsession. One would say she can be extremely devoted to something when she puts both her heart and mind to it. But in fact, it’s possibly because of her heart—because of the strong emotion she’s capable of—that leads to her downfall with Light Yagami.

Naomi had been put on leave from the FBI for a short period of time (during the time she worked with L in "Another Note") because of an incident that occurred during a sting operation of a drug cartel. She had blown her team’s cover, the entire operation, when she’d refused to pull the trigger of her gun against a thirteen-year-old child. The child had been a criminal, granted, but she hadn’t been able to shoot him when she saw the look in his eyes. That look had suggested to her that he didn’t know the ramifications of the life of crime he’d chosen. And while she knew the criminal profile, and knew that his future was probably bleak and that was how he’d ended up in such a predicament, Naomi refused to allow herself to believe that his destiny had been prewritten and that he had to accept his fate. She wouldn’t let herself believe that all human deaths were controlled by some unseen hand. So she’d forfeited her team’s success, and received temporary suspension as punishment. But she doesn’t regret her decision, even to the present day.

Naomi’s weaknesses are few and far between, but her capacity for emotion is one of them. She never has been and never will be an ice queen. It is possible that her feelings for her deceased fiancé somewhat clouded her judgment in her encounter with Kira, and allowed her to let down her guard around Light Yagami in her attempt to get involved in the case. It is also possible that she somewhat fell prey to Light's exuberant charm, and that was what led to her defeat by him.

But what is really more likely is that another cause of her downfall, strictly circumstantial (because he would never want her to come to harm), is her complete and total trust in L, especially after their success in solving the LABB murder cases together. During Naomi’s conversation with Light, she reveals that she knows L personally, and Light of course uses this to his advantage to learn her name, telling her she would be an asset to the Kira Task Force that his father heads as chief of police. Naomi makes the comment that Light seems very similar to L, and that fact is what eventually led her to trust him. One could say that L himself—and her belief and devotion to him—is one of her weaknesses.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
Naomi Misora’s character could have been specifically written for a dark paranormally-influenced game. She is a detective with ties to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation on the trail of a supernatural serial killer, in Death Note canon. She is mature and serious-minded, and can actively defend herself in dangerous situations. Naomi has been trained both physically and mentally for grueling and demanding situations – a gory murder scene will not cause her to pass out or shriek with feminine fright. She’s made of stronger stuff; there is nothing lighthearted about her.
